SELECTING YOUR HOUSING

1.  Take the housing application seriously

Housing is a defining part of your study abroad experience so make sure to take your time with the application. When you write the essay be honest about your living habits and what you’re looking for out of your study abroad experience. It’s best to give a lot of information so that DIS can make the best decision when placing you in housing.

Even though you rank the housing options, in the case of residential communities and kollegiums, each one is completely different. Writing a generic essay so you get the housing style you want will hurt you in the end. There are residential communities and kollegiums that look like apartments and others that are dorm style. What you write in your essay will help DIS understand what the best placement for your living style is within each housing option.

Selecting your housing is probably one of the most stressful decisions you will make before heading off to Copenhagen. And you definitely should take it seriously because it is without a doubt a huge part of your experience.

So I’m going to try and help reduce that stress by sharing a few tips on how to select your housing for DIS.

2.  Don't just apply for what your friends are applying for

It’s really easy to get wrapped up in what your friends want out of study abroad. Make sure you’re being honest to yourself and what you want during your semester in Copenhagen, and not just following what your friends are doing or have done. Not only this but if you select a residential community or kollegium, you won’t get to select a roommate. Because of this, it is very likely that you and your friends from home will be living in different parts of the city.

3.  Reflect on your lifestyle, habits, and what makes you happy

When thinking about housing while in Copenhagen, take time to really evaluate your lifestyle. Think about your habits and what you want out of a housing option. Make sure you're honest about what you like and don’t like. Do you need alone time? Do you like living in a city? Are you independent? Etc. It’s so important to think through your lifestyle and select the housing option that best fits it as opposed to trying to make your lifestyle fit into a housing option you’ve been told is great.

Overall just take your time and be honest with yourself. If you have any questions about housing reach out to DIS or other former students. Good luck!
